Imitational Styles of Kung Fu
In Chinese boxing (Kung Fu / Wushu) the imitation of animals is a
very important aspect. In the boxing styles that imitate animals,
the fighting skills of the animals are translated in for human beings
applicable forms.
There are many animal styles. Some Kung Fu / Wushu schools are
devoted to one animal style, while other schools, like the famous
Shaolin school, uses lots of different animal styles. In this section
we will mention the different animal styles, without mentioning which
schools use them. Even though often the animal styles have the same
origins, through time the styles have developed in different
sub-styles.
The praying-mantis-imitating style for example has different styles
throughout China.
There are also imitation styles, where it isn't an animal that is
being imitated, but a certain situation, like for example the 'drunken
style'. There even excists a ´drunken monkey´style...
Last there are the mythical animal styles like the dragon and the
phoenix, as well as the combined styles, where one uses techniques of
several imitation styles, like the crane- and tiger-style from the
Hung Gar Kung-Fu style, or the five-animal-style of the Shaolin temple...
Most
imitational styles also use some weapons, like the monkey-stick,
or the praying mantis-straightsword.
