Shaolin Kung Fu Styles

Zui Quan (Drunken Boxing) (01)

(Also have a look at the gallery > videoclips to see a very nice zui-jian performance...)

The Shaolin Zui Quan (Drunkards Boxing) style is probably one of the most controversial styles known in Shaolin boxing. In this style the performer acts to be drunk, to trick his adversary into thinking he can't fight, while in fact he is sober. Than he attacks with surprising, usually acrobatic, attacks.

There are many legends about this style and its history. It is often said, that when the monks saved the emperor, he gave them, as a reward, the right to eat meat, and drink whine. Because of this the monks were often found in a drunk state, and robbed. That's why they invented the 'drunkards boxing'. This way no-one knew if a monk was really drunk or not, so people were afraid of attacking them.

Ofcourse for performing a 'drunken boxing' form one should never be really drunk. It could even be dangerous, because there are a lot of difficult and acrobatic tumbling techniques included in this form. During this form the hands are usually used as if they were holding a whine-cup.

In the Shaolin 'drunken' style there are two weapons that are being used ; 'the drunken staff' and the 'drunken straight sword' (which is the most seen), however even the drunken bench form, and other ´drunken´forms are being practised...
