Sanda Tournament Rules
CH. 1 - General rules
Art. 1 Tournament types
Competitors must be at least 18 years
of age. Tournaments can be based on individuals or teams.
Art. 2 Duration
The match will consist of 2 rounds of
2 minutes each, with a break of 1 minute. If necessary a third round will be
held, in case the previous 2 rounds score even.

Art. 4 Weight Verification
The weight will be checked from the
lightest categories. If the athlete's weight is below the limit of the chosen
category he/she remains in that category; those athletes whose weight is above
the category limit won't be allowed to fight (maximum overweight accepted is 100
g).
Art. 5 Match Area
The Match Area is a mat square (8 x 8
meters) possibly raised 60 cm from the floor. If the match area is raised from
the ground the surrounding area must be padded.
Art. 6 Entering and exiting the match area
1) Once the athletes have been
introduced, they will stand and perform the "palm & fist" salute to the referees.
2) Before each fight the athletes will
perform the same salute to the referee and to the opponent. The same at the end
of the match.
3) Upon the call of their name the
competitors will reach the red or white line together with the coach, as
indicated by the jury. The first athlete called is "red " and will take place at
the right of jury's table.
Art. 7 Dress Code and protection gear
1) During the match the athlete will
wear:
- Head gear (without the front grid)
- Mouthpiece
- Chinese chest protector
- Groin cup
- Shin pad (without padded footgear)
- Gloves
- Hand bandage is optional
2) Gloves weight:
- 8 oz for the categories up to 70 Kg
- 10 oz for the categories over 70 Kg
3) The athlete will be bare-footed and
will wear trunks. A T-shirt is optional.
Art. 8 Tournament signals
1) The "ready" signal will be issued
before the beginning of each round; the gong will denote the conclusion of the
round.
2) Whenever is needed the referee can
stop the match.
3) If an athlete collects 6 points of
penalties or more the referee will stop the match and the athlete will be
disqualified.
4) Points recorded by the corner
referees will be gathered at the end of each round. The score at the end of each
round will be notified by the jury table.
Art. 9 Others
1) The athlete will respect the
referee's decisions. Any claim will be presented by the coach to the jury in
written form.
2) The trained and the physician will
be seated in the places assigned to them. Suggestions can be given only between
two rounds. It is forbidden to make suggestions or yell while the match is going.
Art. 10 Abandonment
1) If the athlete cannot continue the
match because of an injury or for any other reason this will be considered as an
abandonment.
2) During the match the athlete can
give up by raising an hand.
3) During the match the coach can call
for an abandonment.
4) A competitor will be considered
abandoning after that his/her name has been called for 3 times before the match
starts.
CH. 2 - Referees and Jury
Art. 11 Referees and Jury composition
1) There will be a tournament referee
with 1 or 2 assistants.
2) The referee team will be organised
with a main referee, 1 referee assistant, 1 match referee, 3 or 5 corner referee,
1 registration attaché.
3) The jury will be based upon 1
president, 1 time attaché and 1 score attaché (they will be responsible for
preparing the tournament records)
Art. 12 Roles of Referees and Jury
1) The tournament referee:
- Controls the running of the
tournament.
- Is responsible for the adequacy of
the tournament area and the protections.
- Solves the problems arising during
the tournament by applying the rules, but cannot change the rules.
- Gives directions to the referee
team and the jury.
- Prepare the tournament meeting for
the PWKA federation council.
2) the tournament referee assistant:
- Helps the tournament referee.
- Replace the tournament referee
whenever he/she is missing.
3) The main referee:
- Is responsible for the fitness of
the protections wear by the competitors.
- Is responsible for organising the
task of his/her referee team.
- Check the match and the corner
referees and the jury and can decide to replace them.
- Has the last word in case of
dispute between the referees.
- In case a problem happens he/she
can stop the match and correct the problem. If he/she notice a mistake made by
one of the referee he/she can change it.
4) The referee assistant:
- Whenever is needed acts as the main
referee.
- If the main referee is missing he/she
will cover the role.
5) The match referee:
- Verifies the athletes protections.
- Manages the matches with orders and
gestures.
- Is responsible for the application
of the tournament rules.
- Decides the assignment of points
related to takedowns or exits.
- Assigns the penalties and fouls.
- Decides the disqualifying of a
competitor, after summoning the referee team.
- Protects the athletes against
injuries.
- Announces the result of the matches.
6) The corner referees:
- Assign the points.
- Show to the main referee the exit
point when a competitor is pushed off.
- Are allowed to ask for explanation
to the main referee.
- Are summoned by the main referee to
express their opinion when a competitor is going to be disqualified, or in any
peculiar situation that can happen.
- At the end of each match sign the
score sheet.
7) Jury:
President:
- Supervises the jury work.
- Prepare the tournament schedule.
- Controls the preparation of the
tournament tables and the subscription of the competitors.
- Checks, records and announces the
results of each match
- Solve any problem related to the
tournament.
- Records any written claim from the
coaches and forwards them to the Council.
- Signs the tournament tables.
Time Attaché:
- Checks the gongs and the
stopwatches
- Is responsible for the duration of
each round and the breaks, and for announcing their start/stop.
- Halt the stopwatch only upon a
signal from the main referee.
- Signals the end of the round if a
competitor is pushed off the match area twice or if the competitor collects 6
penalties.
Score Attaché:
- Fills the tournament tables.
- Keeps the record of the penalties
and fouls, as signaled by the main referee.
- Keeps the count of the exits and
allerts the Time Attaché when the maximum of two exits per round are reached.
- Check the score assigned by the
corner referee by verifying fouls, penalties and exits.
8) Registration attaché:
- Is responsible for verifying the
athletes weight.

Ch. 3 - The Match
Art. 13 Attack and defence
Attack and defence techniques are
those specific to Sanda
Art. 14 Valid targets
Valid targets are
Art. 15 Fouls and penalties
Are considered fouls or penalties the
following:
- Striking to the back of the head,
the neck, the throat or the groin.
- Head butts.
- Elbows or knee strikes to the head
or to the body.
- Repeated strikes to the head.
- Striking a fallen opponent -
hitting the joints.
- Locks or levers.
Art. 16 Victory of the match
Victory of the match is assigned to an
athlete in these cases:
- If there is an evident technical
discrepancy between the competitors and one of them is not able to defend.
- If a competitor is knocked down and
remains to the ground for more than 10 seconds, or if he/she can get up but is
still dulled.
- If a competitor is injured by a
foul attack and the physician determines that the match cannot be continued (this
required an assessment from the main referee).
- If the opponent gives up.
- If the opponent has cumulated 6
points of penalties.
Art. 17 Victory of the round
The round is won by an athlete in
these cases:
- If the opponent is pushed of the
mat twice.
- If during a round the opponent is
hit in a valid target and is counted 8 seconds for 3 times.
Art. 18 Scoring
3 points techniques:
- Forcing the opponent out of the
match area.
- To take down the opponent, after a
sweep or grappling (must be completed within 3 seconds).
- The opponent falls to the ground
after a badly performed technique
- Flying technique (if the technique
is successful and the athlete afterward falls to the ground he/she still gets
3 points, otherwise 3 points are assigned to the other athlete).
2 points techniques:
- Kicking the head or the chest
- Foul assigned to the opponent
1 point techniques:
- Kicking the opponent's legs
- Hand techniques
- Penalties assigned to the opponent.
Art. 19 No points assigned
- The competitors hit a valid target
simultaneously or in succession.
- Both the competitors fall to the
ground or off the mat simultaneously or in succession
- The competitors fight in a fuzzy
manner.
- A takedown is performed in more
than 3 seconds.
- A successful technique is performed
to the opponent's legs but the technique is blocked with the knee.
Art. 20 Penalties, Fouls and Disqualifying
Penalties (1 point):
- The competitor reach the match area
behind time.
- The coach yells or makes
suggestions during the match.
- The competitor yells to scare or
annoy the opponent.
- The competitor interrupts
continuously the match to adjust the protection gear.
Fouls (2 points):
- The athlete or the coach yells or
insults the opponent or the referees.
- The athlete does not obey to the
referee's order.
- The athlete uses forbidden
techniques or hits forbidden targets.
- The athlete attacks the opponent
before the start signal, or after the end signal.
- The athlete attacks the opponent
with a valid technique while the opponent is down.
- The athlete strikes the opponent as
reaction to a foul.
- The athlete collects several
penalties for the same reason.
If the behaviour leading to a foul is
repeated or is considered serious it will cause a disqualifying.
Disqualifying:
- The competitor is behaving
improperly with the opponent or with the referee.
- The competitor intentionally hurts
the opponent using a forbidden technique.
- The competitor has cumulated
penalties or fouls for a total of 6 points.
- The competitor repeatedly commits a
foul.
