In the 'soft' style it is called 'Taiji Jian', and the straight sword is being used to concentrate en direct the energy.

Taijijian (Chinese: 太极剑; pinyin: tàijíjiàn; literally "Taiji Sword") is a sword used in the Taijiquan technique of wushu (sport) curriculum. The sword is a narrow, double-edged blade like the Jian.
